Men have worn robes in one form or another for centuries, and in some cultures they remain formal dress. In ours the context is narrower: at home, and after the shower, the bath or the sauna.

The catalogue

Several distinct types are always in stock.

If you want warmth above all, choose a terry bathrobe with a hood, preferably a long one. These are cut from pure cotton, and the pile is thick, soft and genuinely absorbent — it works like a good towel, which is exactly what you want after a shower or a sauna.

Short men's robes, cut to mid-thigh or just above the knee. Terry and velour, hooded or not.

Jersey robes in soft knit that warms without weight and does not irritate the skin. These come into their own in the shoulder seasons, when the heating is off and the house is colder than anyone would like.

Velour robes, which are essentially a short-pile fabric with a plush face. They look considerably more expensive than they are, and cotton velour breathes well.

Fleece robes hold heat exceptionally well. Fleece is a light synthetic, but it is breathable, hard-wearing and water-repellent, which makes it the strongest option for winter.

Some styles carry an embroidered emblem on the left chest. The cuts are mostly classic — wrap-style with a belt, patch pockets, and either a hood or a shawl collar. The colours and patterns vary more: multicoloured check and vertical stripes on white, alongside plain navy, grey and red.
