The spacer fabric itself

The word spacer has several meanings in English — a gap, a separator, something that holds two things apart. All of them apply here, because the cup contains a layer that gives the bra the properties described above.

Spacer fabric is a three-dimensional knit. A fine outer layer and a fine inner layer are joined by a third layer of crossing threads, so that in cross-section it looks like a 3D mesh. It functions as padding, but it weighs almost nothing, and air passes straight through it while moisture evaporates. In the trade it is sometimes called 3D air knit, and it is the same principle used in technical sportswear.
