Boyshorts: what the cut is
This is the most covered of the everyday cuts. The back panel covers the bottom completely, the front and back are the same width, and the sides are extended into a short, wide piece along the thigh. The name comes from the resemblance to scaled-down men's boxers.
What sets boyshorts apart from briefs is that extended side. Briefs end at the leg line, while boyshorts carry the fabric further onto the thigh. That's why under a short skirt or dress they give more confidence than the more open cuts.
Are women's boxers and boyshorts the same thing?
Almost, they're close relatives. Women's boxer briefs are the same cut with a slightly longer leg, closer to men's boxers. The difference is in leg length, not construction, which is why both sit side by side in the catalog. For maximum thigh coverage, look at the boxers; for something shorter, take classic boyshorts.
Anti-chafing shorts for the thighs
This is the main practical reason boyshorts sell in summer.

- Seam type. Seams should be flat or laser-cut, or the seam itself will start to chafe.

Go by your hip measurement and check the brand's chart via the "check your size" button on the product page. With boyshorts the thigh fit matters more than with shorter cuts. Too small leaves a ridge on the leg, too big a leg that rolls up.
